Marketing of the Tench.
The current reality reflects official production figures of Tench very scarce, over 30 tons. The data registered, are obtained with
great difficulty and come from the production in the double system of :
-
Industrial in semi-intensive mode.
-
Artisan in ponds, with uses sometimes agricultural and livestock shared.
However, the estimated non-census figure including poaching
and undeclared fishing is close to 300 tons. The traditional areas of production are the two provinces of Extremadura; Cáceres and
Badajoz, together with Salamanca and Zamora, coinciding with the natural areas of consumption.
In Spain there has been a gradual decrease
in the traditional extensive production of tench. There is a huge mismatch between the production capacity of Tench, estimated at
about 100-200 tons, and the current traditional demand for Tench estimated at about 500-600 tons. This situation justifies that the
Tench is currently considered as a luxury product and its final purchase price sometimes exceeds 15 euros per kilo. Therefore, there
is a current demand from the traditional national market of Tench (centred in the regions of the western part of Spain; Extremadura
and Castilla y León) estimated at about 500 tons, which must be covered quickly before it disappears or is displaced by other foreign
species coming from imports.
These circumstances, prioritize two immediate objectives of the production of the "VAD" Aquaculture Center
:
- Achieve maximum production capacity, in the period of 2 years.
- Shorten more than 6 months the time necessary to reach the size of commercial tench, respecting the well-being of the animal and
the environment.
Raw Materials : Prices, Purchases and Provenance
The Main Raw Materials used are two :
Organic or Ecological Specific Feedingstuffs for Tench : It is planned to buy in companies specializing
in aquaculture and specific ecological feeds for Tench. According to Regulation (CE) Nº 889/2008 of ecological aquaculture feedingstuffs,
the feeding regimes are conceived prioritizing, the health of the species, the high nutritional composition for the different stages
of its development guaranteeing a high quality of the final edible product and a low environmental impact. For omnivorous aquaculture
species such as tench, feedingstuffs are obtained from organic raw materials of plant or animal origin, such as fishmeal, fish oil
and ingredients derived from fish offal already captured for consumption human in fisheries, whose sustainability has been certified
under Regulation (EU) Nº 1380/2013 of the European Parliament and Council. In the breeding of larvae of ecological juveniles, they
will be used as organic feedingstuffs phytoplankton and zooplankton conventional. The formulation of this feeding is the result of
the collaboration of the R+D+I department of VAD SL with several companies supplying organic feedingstuffs, tested and certified by
the European Community, for different organic aquaculture species. The estimated purchase price is €700/tons, to which an annual price
increase of 2% has been estimated.
Organic Fingerlings of Tench : In the start-up of the aquaculture center, it is envisaged the use
of Ecological Fingerlings of Tench coming from own installations or their purchase from reproducers of ecological tench. The controlled
cyclical breeding of fingerlings with own reproducers will allow the growth of production, its use as food and its sale. The annual
increase in the value of the fingerlings is 2%.
Sale of the Productions : Outputs to the Market of the Product ( Tench )
The outputs to the market of the product have their origin in the growth of the production, being related to the size and weight of
commercialization of the species :
- 1 ) Marketing of Tench fingerlings of 10 grams : Whose sale is directed to the repopulation
of public or private aquatic masses, supply of experimental material to universities and research centers, and even the production
of plankton as food for fingerlings of other species.
- 2 ) Marketing of Tench in standardized size of 120-150 grams : Whose destination
will be the existing national traditional market of Tench, supplying the current unsatisfied demand of the market that demand more
than ten times the current capacity of production.
In the actions of implantation of the Tench, it has established as model of development,
implantation and guide, a sector very similar to that of the Tench, the business trajectory of the sector of the Continental fish
farming of the trout, with more than 50 years of effectiveness professional, international implantation, based on competitiveness,
with export levels equivalent to one third of the national production, and with a satisfactory positioning in a channel as selective
as that of the great distribution and where the transformed product predominates. Given the similarities between the two sectors,
and taking into account that there are considerations in the initial development phase of trout that differentiate them, in view of
the development experienced by markets, future patterns of evolution are established with Market potential for the Tench estimated
at 20.000 tons contemplating the full range of sizes, presentations and marketing channels, in a horizon of 8-10 years and 60.000
tons in 2.030.
Therefore, in the business trajectory of the sector of the Tench respecting the habits of buying by places, for the
homes and hostelry will be sold in fish shops, supermarkets, hypermarkets, distributors and wholesalers established in the provinces
of Zamora, Salamanca, Cáceres and Badajoz. Gradually it will be accessed in some Mercas (markets), extending the scope of the regional
Mercas like Valladolid, Ciudad Real, Segovia and Toledo with historical tradition in the consumption of river fish. Simultaneously,
the initial phases of transformation will be addressed in addition to the presentation in fresh (whole, filleted without thorns and
eviscerated), developing national promotion campaigns to make the product known throughout Spain. Subsequent increases in production
will allow us to tackle new Mercas, direct sales to retailers and first contacts with the great distribution.
